Incredible but true! The year 2009 has arrived and with it the experiences of a very dismal 2008 for many, except the survivors who can clearly justify their survival to three things all company executives reach for in times like these.
1. The ability to see what has to be done
2. The will to execute
3. The perseverance to continue on course
In times like these, we see how recruiting starts taking a back seat or how the time to recruit a candidate is longer and more levels are added to the interviewing and hiring stages. Obviously, when it comes to reducing or slashing budgets, manpower is one of the first areas to go… or is it? Or for that matter, should it? When you have a company that is service oriented and is fueled by people… this could be a very dangerous move; risky, to say the least.
We have all, I’m sure, over the years seen how company executives make the wrong decisions for all the right reasons but without seeing the complete picture of where they are today and how they got there. Sometimes the most obvious of decisions is not necessarily the best one. It might take a creative or bold alternative to solve any given problem but ultimately the decision made should never be one based solely on finances, especially where people are concerned.
It’s amazing how people quickly forget how important a particular position was when initially hiring and how that importance quickly fades during times like these.
Recruiting a good executive has and always will be a difficult exercise, finding the right fit, the person who brings to her or his job the right skill sets and experiences is a grueling exercise that hard times should only want you to keep on board your best people. Better reduce salaries, benefits, perks, and allowances…whatever but, keeping together the right team is as critical during difficult periods as any other.

Ms. Ivette Julbe is a Recruiting Consultant in the Administrative Office Personnel group since 1998. She is responsible for the recruiting of Executive Office Personnel positions. Ivette joined our company after working for eight years with another local recruiting firm, first as a Research Consultant and later as a Consultant. Before this, Ivette spent five years working with various administrative positions within the human resources field. Ivette has a Masters Degree in Public Administration with a Major in Human Resources from the University of Puerto Rico and has a Bachelors Degree in Science with a Major in Biology from the same university.

Ms. Clara Amiama is Vice President, Senior Consultant and Partner at CAREERS INC. Clara also supervises the Financial, banking and Information System group in our company, which is responsible for recruiting all Finance & Accounting positions, as well as Banking, Information System and Lawyers. Clara joined the Company in 1995 after spending three years in Mexico and two years with a multinational recruiting firm in Puerto Rico.
Prior to her becoming a recruitment consultant, Clara worked for several years at Procter & Gamble where she earned several promotions including being the first woman in Latin America to become a District Filed representative. In addition, Clara has had experience in the fields of Advertising and Marketing Research with the advertising agency Marti Flores Prieto & Wachtel.

Ms. Carla Deyo is Senior Vice President and Partner at Careers Inc. Carla also supervises the Sales & Marketing group in our company, which is responsible for the recruiting of all marketing & sales positions across all industries, including the Retail and Hospitality industries as well.
Born in Quito, Ecuador and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she attended the University of Puerto Rico majoring in English and Theater. Ms. Deyo developed her recruiting skills with Careers Inc. when she joined our firm in 1979, progressing from Administrative Consultant to her current position. During these years, Ms. Deyo was responsible for developing the administrative personnel and retail areas to their current levels within the company. She is a member of the Sales & Marketing Executives Association of San Juan and is part of the Advisory Board of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Ms. Deyo is one of the first four professionals in Puerto Rico designated as a Certified Personnel Consultant, by the National Association of Personnel Services. It is estimated that during the last few years Ms. Deyo and her team have been responsible for placing over 500 of the more successful and creative professionals in the areas of sales, marketing and advertising with combined salaries of approximately thirty-five million dollars.
On November 1997, Ms. Deyo became a Partner in Careers Inc. and in April 2008 became Senior Vice President / Owner.
RUTH GONZALEZ MENDEZ, CPC Senior Consultant / President

Ms. Ruth González Méndez is the President and Partner at Careers/Inc. Ruth also supervises the Manufacturing & Construction group in our company, which is responsible for the recruiting of all positions within the Manufacturing, Construction, Engineering, Architecture, Research & Development, and Insurance sectors. The Manufacturing / Construction group at Careers/Inc. has seven professionals assigned to it.
Ruth joined our company on November 1993 after working for a period of five years as an Executive Recruiter at Executive Search Associates, where she consistently was their top recruiter.
Prior to her becoming an Executive Recruiter, Ms. González worked in the highly competitive world of investment banking, at Drexel Burnham Lambert. She was originally recruited to start-up their Customer Service Department. She was later promoted to Marketing Coordinator and finally to Associate Broker. This experience provided the basis for her approach to executive recruiting and Total Quality Service.
As President, Ms. González and her team have been responsible for placing over 1,500 executives in her area, with combined yearly salaries of approximately one hundred fifty million dollars.
Ms. González has a degree in Accounting from New York University and is certified as a Personnel Administrator from the Advanced Business School of Personnel Administration. She is also a designated Certified Personnel Consultant by the National Association of Personnel Services.

Sol M. Cortijo / Consultant

Sol M. Cortijo is at present a Recruiting Consultant for the Banking, Finance and Senior IT group at Careers Inc.
Graduate of the University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Sol worked as an intern with Pueblo Supermarkets before joining Borschow Hospital and Medical Supplies where she was a Human Resources Analyst for four years.
She continued her career in Human Resources working for ICI Paints, Humana and Glaxo SmithKline – Pharma as a Human Resources Assistant.
Sol joined Careers Inc early in 2007 where she began as a Recruiting Assistant for the Banking, Finance and Senior IT group and in July 2008 was promoted to Junior Consultant.
